FLOATING BRICK HOUSE

Stylus Architects approach was to faithfully restore the front section of the Victorian house and add a contemporary extension to the rear of the property. The existing house was made of up two main parts, the Victorian section and several later additions to the rear. This fashioned a mis-match of form, style and space.

The Floating Brick House extension replaces the dilapidated 1960’s addition, harmonizing a mixture of classic and contemporary styles. The brick mass canterlevers out at a different angle to the glazing below providing a sense of drama at various perspectives depending on where you stand. The metal reveal, frames the light glazed element and solid re-claimed brick surround.

Inside the extension is an open plan industrial themed kitchen and dining area with a polished concrete floor. The design maximises natural daylight with a slot roof light above the kitchen which floods light into the deeper parts of the space. The space is framed with a continuous recessed LED lighting creating a flowing connectivity.

The clients love their new space, their favourite part is the industrial themed kitchen with the Crittall windows and the fact that the cantilever canopy has no supporting columns.  They get so much enjoyment observing the rear of the house when they go out into the garden. ‘It’s such an exciting space and every time I look at it, I think wow, I really live here!’.
